The Cross with Jesus (Crucifix):
Pastor Moss discussed this briefly during his 11/16/2010 Education Institute. The crucifix (i.e., the cross with Jesus on it) is the primary cross symbol used in the Catholic church (as Rev. Clyde stated). The symbolism behind this is that Jesus suffered for us (and suffers with us). This is a central message of the Catholic faith (what it means to be Catholic).
The Empty Cross:
The empty cross is the symbol most used in the protestant church. It symbolizes that Christ not only died, but has risen (thus the “empty” cross).
There is nothing inherently wrong with the symbolism behind the crucifix. After all, most Christians will agree that Jesus suffered for us and suffers with us. However, as Christians, I believe it comes down to where we choose to place our emphasis. The principal message of Christianity is that Christ died, was buried, and has RISEN!!!
- This is why our worship day is now on Sunday (and not on the Sabbath)
- This is why our most important holy day is on Easter (A crucifix might suggest that it should be on Good Friday)
The empty cross points to a RISEN savior. Those who are “mature” in the faith and who understand the symbolism of the crucifix will probably not be hindered by what it represents. However, for those who may not understand the symbolism or may not know Jesus for him/herself (as Rev. Clyde suggests), the crucifix could be a source of misinterpretation. At the least, it could cause people to shift their focus away from what should be the most important message of our faith.
Danny S. Creed
